For this reason, their overall environmental impact will depend heavily on how often one replaces them. In general, you're right that straight razors are probably best, but I'm a little too squeamish to use one (especially with soap). Thus the choice ends up being between electrics and safety razors, where I think electrics might actually have an advantage given a sufficiently low replacement rate.</description>

Electric (especially rechargeable) use products that are extremely damaging to the environment (niCad, Tungsten, plastics).  There are many more components to an electric razor, many of which have high-energy manufacturing processes involved.

Straight razors can last for decades.  Electric razors won't.  Straight razors can be found in good used shape for $10-$1000.

Shaving with hard or soft soap is better and more economical than shaving creams.  Soaps are pretty low-impact to make and take little packaging.</description>
